If you decide to take the applicant on as an apprentice, we would want you to treat him or her as your favorite nephew or niece from your favorite brother or sister. That doesn’t promise or guarantee the candidate anything and the candidate knows this. He or she also knows that it does put him at the head of the line in front of everyone else. He knows that if he were related to you, if you were the uncle, aunt or even cousin, that would give him opportunity, which is what they seek.
Almost any question you might have as to your responsibilities - what is expected - how much time is required, etc. can be answered with this preamble:
Do what you would do if your niece/nephew wanted to get into the business
and you couldn’t talk them out of it.
We have already tried to talk them out of it. They know about the bad hours, bad pay, no parking place, no dental plan. They must be prepared to make sacrifices or we won’t waste our time to refer them to you in the first place.
